Existentialist therapy and addictions

One of the things I liked about existential therapy was the (to me) direct correlation it seemed to have with treating addictions. But it is difficult to pinpoint how. And, of course, existential psychotherapy doesn't jive with everyone. There was a point to this, but it eludes me at the moment...

what comes to mind for me about this is that addictions often hide abuse or maltreatment from the person that was abused. what can lie underneath are bigger questions such as "why me?", "why did this happen?", "what did i do to deserve it?". "why am i even here?". "would i be better off dead?", "whats the meaning of all of it?".

ultimately, irrational beliefs can get formed such as, "i must be a bad person.", "I'm not good enough.", "im not safe.", "im not in control.".

addictions help cover all this up.

answering those questions when sober can be really difficult and changing those beliefs around is very complicated work.
      worthwhile no less.
