Hi! I'm no longer a practitioner, and am somewhat rusty on the purely academic side of this subject matter, but I'm about to get into a discussion with a friend on what it means to be genuine, and what it means to be authentic. How would you go about broaching these topics with a lay-person? What are the crucial bits for the person to grasp when considering the quality of being genuine vs the quality of authenticity?

Re: genuine-ness & authenticity
Mon, January 15, 2007 - 10:12 AMthere is a huge long post on .... where? the existential philosophy tribe? i dont know. but now that i've read it, i have little antenna everytime someone says "authenticity" i have no idea what it means any more. that conversation totally corrupted my capacity to take that word with even a smidgen of assumption! -

Re: genuine-ness & authenticity
Tue, January 16, 2007 - 5:17 PMI would say that being genuine is projected through ego and is intended/needed to be seen by another. Similar to sincerety.
Where as authenticity is identified within the conscience and is about maintaining emotional bounderies based on the core self's desires and integrity. Like a guilt its about keeping us true to how we feel, not what we wish to be seen as.
