I would like to tap into the knowledge of this group. I am looking for a PhD program in Psychology that allows exploration and research into aspects of positive psychology and would entertain some distance learning. I know UPenn began the program and has a MAPP program but no doctoral programs. Claremont also has a focus on quality of life/flow with Csikszentmihalyi but their program is campus-based only. I am searching, in particular, for faculty that have similar interests and would serve as mentor in supporting my focus on creativity, courage, and authenticity. Additionally, I'm looking for an APA accredited program that would support an academic career.

  • Hello Linda,

Yes, the Institute of Transpersonal Psychology does have an emphasis on Positive Psychology, more accurately, Transpersonal psychology. At this time the global Ph.D. program does not have APA accreditation. There is a challenge here. APA accreditation requires that certain courses are taken or required by its students. That means that many of the less traditional, meaning courses based in positive, transpersonal/humanistic psychology fall outside of the APA guidelines. I'm currently a PhD Clinical student at ITP, the trade off has been that I do get the positive psychology aspect in the course work. Since having APA stamped on my license is not a concern for me, I have enjoyed my stay here.

For you...hmmmm... --- you can try Pacific Graduate School of Psychology in Redwood City, CA. They have a distance learning program for the Ph.D. and PsyD in clinical psychology. I'm not sure if both are APA accredited, but I do know that the residential programs are APA approved. Here is their website. I have heard good things about PGSP.

    Good luck,
